OpenAI Cracks Open Its Deep Research Tool for Free Users

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI is introducing a lighter version of its “Deep Research” feature to ChatGPT.
  • This version will soon be available to free users, offering advanced research capabilities.
  • It provides in-depth research like the standard version but delivers shorter reports.
  • Usage limits apply: 5 tasks/month for free users, more for paid subscribers.

OpenAI is making its sophisticated “Deep Research” feature more accessible by rolling out a new, lightweight version for ChatGPT.

This development means even free users will soon be able to tap into this powerful tool, previously a perk of pricey subscriptions.

The Deep Research feature allows ChatGPT to conduct complex, multi-step investigations using online sources. It then compiles detailed reports, complete with citations and summaries of its findings.

It’s particularly handy for digging into complicated subjects in fields like economics, science, law, and technology.

According to OpenAI, this new lightweight version maintains the research depth but condenses the findings into shorter answers, making it quicker and cheaper to run.

Free users will receive five lightweight research tasks per month. Paid Plus and Team users get 15 lightweight tasks monthly after using their initial 10 standard ones. Pro users will have access to 125 standard and 125 lightweight tasks.

Deep Research was often highlighted as a standout component of the high-cost ChatGPT Pro subscription. Bringing a version of this tool to a wider audience, especially at no cost, is a significant step.
