Meta’s New AI Thinks It Knows You Pretty Well

Key Takeaways

  • Meta has launched a new standalone app called Meta AI.
  • It’s designed as a personal AI assistant, competing with services like ChatGPT.
  • The app uses Meta’s advanced Llama 4 model for text, voice, and image interactions.
  • It aims to offer personalized experiences by learning from your Meta profile and activity.
  • Personalization features are rolling out first in the U.S. and Canada.
  • The app includes a “Discover” feed but cannot currently browse the live web.

Meta unveiled its own AI application this week, stepping directly into competition with popular AI assistants like ChatGPT.

Called the Meta AI app, it’s designed to function separately from Meta’s social media platforms. Think of it as a personal AI helper you can interact with through text, voice, or even images.

The company stated this launch is a move towards creating a “more personal AI.” You can download it now for both iOS and Android devices.

Meta believes its advantage lies in its vast understanding of user preferences from Facebook and Instagram. The idea is to use this knowledge, along with details you choose to share directly with the AI, to tailor conversations and responses specifically for you.

According to a post on Meta’s blog mentioned by Adweek, the app can remember things you tell it and pick up details from your chats to create a more relevant experience.

For now, these truly personalized features are being introduced only in the United States and Canada. The app is also available in Australia and New Zealand, but personalization isn’t active there yet.

One feature setting it apart is a “Discover” feed, where you can see interesting ways other people are using the AI and try their prompts yourself.

However, unlike some competitors, the current version of Meta AI can’t search the internet for real-time information.

The AI is powered by Llama 4, which Meta describes as its most capable model yet, offering better reasoning and quicker responses.

This app represents Meta’s biggest step so far into AI products directly for consumers, building on AI features integrated into its existing platforms since last fall.

The timing of the launch is notable, coming just before Meta announced its quarterly financial results.
