Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky believes that for businesses to flourish in the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence, they need to think and act like startups.

During an appearance on The Verge’s “Decoder” podcast, Chesky explained that embracing what he calls “founder mode” is crucial. This approach, he suggests, allows companies to remain agile and responsive to change.

“In the age of AI, my argument is you need to be founder oriented/founder mode, because you’re going to need to be able to move like a startup to be able to adapt,” Chesky stated, according to Business Insider.

He cautioned that larger, more traditionally managed companies might struggle to keep pace, saying they “don’t bode well for this new world.”

Chesky likens the rise of AI to previous technological shifts like the personal computer and the internet. He argues that being in “founder mode” is key to riding this new wave successfully.

“All of us have to be moving as fast as we can,” he emphasized, linking speed and adaptability back to company culture and structure.

This isn’t the first time Chesky has discussed “founder mode.” He previously clarified that it’s not about “swagger,” but rather being deeply involved and focused on the details, ensuring leadership is present and engaged.

Reflecting these ideas, Airbnb has recently launched new offerings called Airbnb Services. These allow users to book experiences like private chefs, photographers, and personal trainers.

Chesky said these services aim to fill a “void” as AI digitizes more aspects of life. He believes AI won’t replace “jobs that are people-to-people oriented.”
