Malaysia’s Quiet State Courts AI and Green Data

Key Takeaways

  • Negri Sembilan is developing two major data centers.

  • The second, an AI data center in Springhill, is being developed by Gamuda Berhad.
  • The state’s strategic location and infrastructure were key decision factors.
  • These projects are expected to create high-tech jobs and boost local revenue.

Negri Sembilan is set to become home to two new data centers, state officials announced.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun confirmed that development is underway. One center in Nilai, supported by US investors, will be a green data facility. The second, located in Springhill, Port Dickson, will specialize in artificial intelligence technology and is being developed by Gamuda Berhad.

Land preparations and initial earthworks for the projects have already started.

Aminuddin highlighted Negri Sembilan’s advantages, noting its strategic proximity to the bustling Klang Valley. He mentioned the state’s excellent highway network and its ability to meet the significant power and water demands required by data centers.

These developments promise significant benefits for the local community, according to Bernama. They are expected to generate high-quality job opportunities, especially in IT, alongside increased investment and tax income for the state.

However, the state government is mindful of the high water consumption typical of data centers. Aminuddin assured that future proposals will be carefully reviewed to ensure water supply sustainability.

To address current and future water needs, Gamuda Berhad is constructing a new water treatment plant. This facility will have a capacity of 67 million litres per day and will be managed by the state water company, Syarikat Air Negeri Sembilan, once completed.

Aminuddin described this as a positive collaboration, ensuring the data center project proceeds without straining local water resources and even helping to resolve existing water supply issues in Springhill and surrounding areas.
